Artist Profile

Paul Cofrancesco studied biology and art at Colgate University. These lifelong interests are evident in his sculpture, which includes portraiture and figurative pieces, as well as abstract works, influenced by natural forms and textures.

Making sculpture captured my interest at an early age. I sculpt in a range of styles, incorporating a variety of subject matter in order to keep a fresh perspective on the work, and to encourage versatility. I enjoy the challenge of creating representational pieces that utilize my training in anatomy. I am also interested in creating abstract series resembling combinations of rock formations, coral, bone and other organic images. There is something about creating a piece that looks as though it could be found in nature, yet is not, that I find intriguing.

Some of my most successful pieces are the results of a concept I call planned spontaneity, a phrase that may seem contradictory at first. I think of it as remaining open and flexible to ideas and changes that present themselves during the creative process, especially in sculptural work where laborious planning can sometimes impede spontaneity. Some of my favorite pieces look completely different than I originally envisioned.
